Vitamins and Iron

VITAMINS AND IRON Vitamin supplements are not necessary for the formula fed infant as the necessary vitamins are included in the formula. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends iron fortified formula for bottle fed babies throughout the first year of life. The iron content in the formula does not cause constipation.  The vitamin content in breast milk varies according to the maternal diet, therefore good all around maternal nutrition is key.  We recommend that the lactating mother continue her supplemental vitamins and iron to assure adequate intake of these nutrients for the best quality breast milk production.  The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends that breast fed babies supplemented with less than 16 oz of formula per day take 200 I.U.  Vitamin D drops per day to prevent Vitamin D deficiency and Ricketts.
