In addition to building strong bones, higher levels of Vitamin D has been found to improve the immune system and help prevent Type 1 diabetes and some forms of cancer. Since children don't usually get enough in their diet and since it is still important to use sunscreens to protect against skin cancer, more Vitamin D is advised.
Infants who are breastfeeding should be supplemented with 400IU of Vitamin D daily. D-vi-sol, Tri-vi-sol, and other droplet formulations are available in most stores.
Formula fed infants should receive one half dose daily (200IU) until the formula producers increase the supplement in infant formula (in progress).
Older children and teens should take a vitamin containing 400IU of Vitamin D daily. Most multivitamins contain this amount. Chewable tablets are convenient for younger children.
It is also important to continue drinking milk and eating calcium rich foods.
