Infant Regurgitation/Spitting

REGURGITATION “Spitting up” in the normal newborn and vomiting in the sick infant should be distinguished. “Projectile” or forceful vomiting may be abnormal. A little drooling with a burp following a feeding is commonly seen. If wet burps are frequent, however, it is always a good idea to examine your feeding practices to assure that you are not overfeeding your infant. The kind of baby most apt to be overfed is the fussy, active baby whom you interpret to be hungry all of the time. Such a baby usually does not want or need more milk. He has other needs, one of which may be sucking. If “spitting up” becomes more prominent, check your baby’s temperature and call us if it is more than 100 degrees rectally.
